d:CON 4 _02 Concept & Mock up of Installation

The novel "No Dram of Mercy" by Sybil Kathigasu, is the first account experiences by the author who attempt to assist her compatriots during Japanese Occupation in Malaya resulted in her imprisonment, tortured and interrogated as well as death. The story is also the timeline of what Sybil experienced from the beginning of Japanese Occupation until the end of WWII. The mock up was inspired by the keyword "TIMELINE" which represent the story line of "No Dram of Mercy".
The mock up was divided by the plots of story. The different light transmission material was fully used to represent each part of plots and connected by the core, which is the lighting. We cannot touch the core of the story which is Sybil Kathigasu, but we can feel her (light)and visualize her figure.(shadow)

The bottom part of mock up (translucent) represent the starting of the story, the beginning of Japanese Occupation and seeking of hope. While the second part of mock up which is narrow, translucent and dark represent the stressful and dangerous condition which Sybil start to help guerillas and being suspended by Japanese. The third part, which is solid, dark, heavy and also opaque material refused the transmission of light, represent all the torture and pain from the Japanese which result her in serious injuries and awful conditions. The top part of mock up represent the ending of story, Sybil was free but also passed away from the injuries sustained during her incarceration in the Batu Gajah Prison.

The picture below was the sketches from Mr.David, during the tutorial on 15 January to inspire us in design development.
